Is This Why You’re Overwhelmed?
Technology is a pain in the ass. And yet…
Technology helps us do more, do it faster, and sometimes even do it better.
But technology is complicated and annoying when it doesn’t do all that it’s supposed to do.
And besides “regular old technology” we have the stuff that’s specifically engineered for lawyers. Which, by the way, did you ever wonder why there are so many legal technology options out there?
I used to wonder about this.
Especially when I’d walk the vendor area of the ABA TechShow conference —a gargantuan space with drooling salespeople desperate to get your business card into their fishbowl.
The clever ones will hand you a puppy to hold, and then give you a hard pitch you can’t easily walk away from…
In those cavernous halls I’ve talked to countless company founders —folks who paid ungodly sums to exhibit at TechShow. I call them “waggy tail startups.”
These are the people who are overwhelming you with technology options. The ones you see at TechShow are just the tip of the iceberg.
So let me explain why there’s an increased flood of new (and mostly useless) legal technology.
The Gold Rush
Non-lawyer techies labor under a severe misapprehension.
They’re absolutely and totally 100% certain that all lawyers are fabulously wealthy.
Even the solo and small firm lawyers. Supposedly they’re all living in golden palaces.
That’s what the non-lawyer techies believe.
Naturally they want to tap into that wealth.
And the key to their fortune (they also believe) is new legal-specific software.
Usually it has a practice management component.
Sure, they know lawyers already have 47 choices in the practice management space.
But they are all completely undaunted.
(You’ve got to admit they’re adorably naive—kind of like puppies).
They firmly believe the software that they’ve spent three years (fulltime) cobbling together is the Holy Grail of practice management software.
(Just like the people streaming into Northern California in 1849 during the Gold Rush).
So, yes the waggy tail startup people are wonderfully endearing, but…
Do not chase their enchanting shiny objects.
Stay in your lane, stick to the plan, and keep driving towards your goal.
If you need help leveraging technology then find people to help you who are realistic and sensible.
As you drive steadily towards your destination you’ll probably notice an increasing number of bugs hitting your windshield.
Don’t stop and don’t get out of the car.
Or you’ll be swarmed.
And before you wander into a carnival show like the ABA TechShow vendor hall, be sure to apply a lot of bug spray.
Oh, and don’t let anyone hand you a puppy either.
And, when you’re ready…
